Every sunrise hot air balloon safari is carefully planned around aviation weather conditions, seasonal flying patterns and passenger safety requirements. Because balloon flights are wind-dependent, departure times may vary slightly throughout the year. Guests are encouraged to dress comfortably for outdoor conditions and arrive prepared for an unforgettable sunrise experience above the Magalies River Valley.
Hot Air Balloon Operational Questions
Our private launch site in Skeerpoort within the Magalies River Valley, approximately one hour from Johannesburg and Pretoria.
Hot air ballooning takes place at SUNRISE ONLY.
Flight times vary throughout the year according to sunrise and seasonal weather conditions. Guests meet at our Clubhouse Pavilion shortly before sunrise.
Sunrise offers the calmest and most stable weather conditions, creating ideal flying conditions and spectacular scenery.
Yes. Passenger safety is always our first priority and all flights are weather dependent.
If weather conditions are unsuitable for flying, the flight will unfortunately need to be postponed. Our reservations team will assist guests with rebooking their experience to another available date.
The actual flight duration is approximately one hour, depending on weather and landing conditions on the day.
The full experience is approximately 4 to 5 hours, including refreshments, the flight and breakfast.
Guests should allow approximately 3 to 4 hours for the full experience, including arrival, pre-flight refreshments, the balloon flight, post-flight sparkling wine and breakfast.
Flight altitude varies depending on weather conditions, wind direction and the pilot’s flight planning on the day.
Hot air balloons fly using heated air inside the balloon envelope. The pilot controls altitude by heating or cooling the air, allowing the balloon to travel with the wind.

Transport to the launch site is not included unless specifically arranged beforehand.
Balloon sizes vary depending on the day’s flight operations and weather conditions. Shared balloon experiences may include other passengers enjoying the sunrise safari together.
The experience includes pre-flight tea, coffee or hot chocolate, approximately one hour in flight, sparkling wine and orange juice after landing, a buffet breakfast at the Clubhouse Pavilion, and a Certificate of Bravery.
We do not have a licenced Halaal kitchen.
Yes. Vegetarian breakfast options are available upon prior request and served as part of the self-service buffet breakfast.

The Magalies River Valley is home to a variety of birdlife, antelope, farm animals and natural landscapes which may occasionally be seen during the flight. While this is not a traditional “Big Five” safari experience, the beauty of the valley, river systems and surrounding countryside forms part of the unique sunrise ballooning experience.

Hot Air Balloon Passenger Questions
Children must be OLDER than 7 years a & children must be TALLER than 1.3 meters in height.
BOTH the age and the height requirements must be met to be allowed to participate.
Children must be accompanied by a parent/guardian for the duration of the activity.
Please advise on booking, the number of children in the party, as well as their ages, heights and weights.
The pilot reserves the right to refuse to load children who are too small on the hot air balloon, for safety reasons.
Children Passengers will be measured on the morning of the flight, at check-in, to ensure they comply with the minimum height requirement. Should the child not be deemed tall enough to safely participate in the hot air balloon activity, the flight ticket will be forfeited (non-refundable nor re-bookable).
No. Pregnant passengers will not be allowed to participate in the hot air ballooning (for safety precautions).
Yes. Most of our guests are first-time balloon passengers. Our experienced pilots and crew guide guests throughout the experience to ensure a comfortable and memorable sunrise adventure.

– nimble enough to climb in and out of the 1350mm high basket without assistance from anyone else,
– be able to jump unassisted from a height of 60cm and
– stand for the duration of the flight; approx. one hour unless stated otherwise.
Temperatures in the balloon are often similar to those on the ground, although mornings can feel cool before sunrise.
Comfortable casual clothing and closed walking shoes are recommended. Early mornings in the valley can be cool, particularly during winter months.

Guests are encouraged to bring a camera, sunglasses, a hat and comfortable clothing suitable for outdoor conditions.
Bags are not allowed on board the aircraft and must be locked away prior to boarding.
