Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris
There are few experiences that stand the test of time. Fewer still that do so with quiet consistency, grace, and an unwavering sense of purpose.
Founded in 1981 by Bill and Mary Harrop, what began as a passion for ballooning has, over the course of more than four decades, evolved into the longest established licensed balloon airline in Southern Africa.

Yet, for all its growth and recognition, the essence of Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris remains unchanged: a devotion to the art of ballooning as it was always meant to be, unhurried, precise, and quietly extraordinary.
At first light, in the stillness of the Magalies River Valley, our balloons rise not with spectacle, but with a certain restraint. There is no rush, no noise beyond the occasional breath of the burner, only the gentle unfolding of a landscape regarded as one of the finest ballooning regions in the world.
Ours is not a transient operation. It is a purpose-built home for ballooning. From our private launch site in Skeerpoort to the Clubhouse Pavilion that awaits our guests on return, every detail has been shaped over time, refined, adjusted, and improved in the manner of any enduring institution.
In the air, the experience is entrusted to licensed pilots and an experienced crew whose professionalism is matched only by their respect for the craft. Safety is not an addition to what we do, it is the foundation upon which everything rests, upheld through decades of aviation discipline and recognition.
But beyond the technical, beyond the operational, there is something else that has carried Bill Harrop’s forward through the years: a sense of occasion.
From the early morning coffee as the balloons are prepared, to the quiet drift above river and bushveld, to the traditional glass raised upon landing, each flight follows a rhythm that has been carefully preserved. And, as tradition dictates, each guest departs not merely with a memory, but with a Citation of Bravery, a small ceremony, perhaps, but one that speaks to the heritage of ballooning itself.
It is this balance of legacy and experience, of tradition and refinement, that defines Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris today.
Not simply a flight, but a continuation of a legacy, one shaped over decades, and shared, quietly, with each new morning.
