A balloon proposal can be wonderfully romantic, but it must also be planned around the realities of a live commercial aviation operation. Weather conditions, balloon preparation, passenger boarding and flight safety will always determine what is possible on the morning.
The most memorable proposals are often the simplest: carefully planned, flexible and centred on the moment itself.
When should you propose?
There are three natural opportunities to propose as part of the balloon safari experience:
- Before the flight, with the balloons as your backdrop
- During the flight
- After landing, during the traditional sparkling wine celebration
Each option creates a different experience, and the best choice will depend on the kind of moment you have imagined.
A hot air balloon proposal before the flight
A pre-flight proposal can be spectacular.
As the sky begins to lighten, the balloon crews start the inflation process. The balloon envelopes fill with air, the burners ignite and the balloons gradually rise upright on the launch field.
There is usually a short window between the balloons standing upright and passengers being called to board. This can provide a beautiful opportunity to propose with the balloons in the background.
The exact timing, number and position of the balloons will depend on the weather and operational requirements on the morning. The opportunity may last only a few minutes, so your plan should be short and uncomplicated.
One simple way to preserve the surprise is to draw your partner’s attention towards the balloons. While they are watching the inflation, you can prepare the ring and get into position. When they turn around, you will be waiting on one knee, with the balloons rising behind you.
Short, simple and unforgettable.
There is another considerable advantage to proposing before take-off. Once the nervous part is over and the answer is yes, you can both relax and enjoy your first adventure as an engaged couple. You will also have the entire flight to take photographs and selfies together with the ring.
Passengers must remain within the designated safety areas and be ready to board immediately when called. The flight cannot be delayed for a proposal, photography or additional arrangements.

Proposing during the balloon flight
There is something undeniably special about asking the question while floating peacefully above the Magalies River Valley.
If you would like to propose during the flight, this must be discussed with our Reservations team beforehand. Your pilot can then be informed of the plan and may provide a discreet signal when the flight conditions allow for a suitable moment.
The pilot’s first responsibility will always be the safe operation of the balloon. A particular view, altitude, photographic background, time or position cannot be guaranteed.
There is also not enough room inside the balloon basket to go down on one knee. The proposal will need to be made while standing securely within your allocated passenger compartment.
Unless you have reserved a private balloon, other passengers will be sharing the basket. The moment will therefore not be completely private, but this is not necessarily a disadvantage.
A fellow passenger may be happy to record the proposal on your phone. This would need to be arranged directly with the passenger and cannot be guaranteed by Bill Harrop’s Balloon Safaris.
A proposal after landing
After landing, the pilot traditionally serves sparkling wine and orange juice to the passengers. This creates a relaxed and celebratory opportunity to ask the question.
The exact landing location cannot be predicted in advance because a hot air balloon travels with the wind. Landings take place on privately owned properties in the surrounding area.
The balloon envelope is normally deflated shortly after landing. It is therefore unlikely that the balloon will remain fully inflated in the background while the proposal takes place.
Friends, family members and photographers cannot follow the balloon or travel independently to the landing site. Access to private landing properties is restricted to passengers, authorised balloon crew and retrieval vehicles.
Shared balloon or private balloon?
Many couples initially assume that an engagement requires a private balloon, but a shared flight can be a wonderful option.
If you propose before take-off, there may be little need for the additional privacy or premium cost of an exclusive flight. Once the proposal has taken place, you can enjoy the safari together and celebrate with the other passengers.
There is something wonderfully festive about sharing the happiness. More passengers mean more people to cheer, congratulate you and raise a glass to your future together.
During an in-flight proposal, a fellow passenger may also provide a better opportunity for someone to capture the moment on your phone.
For couples who prefer complete privacy, a private balloon may be considered. Private flights remain subject to aircraft availability, the combined passenger weights and the legal loading capacity of the available balloon.

Photographing your proposal
Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris does not provide an on-site photographer or videographer.
Our pilots, ground crew and operations team have safety-critical responsibilities throughout the morning. We cannot guarantee that a staff member will be available to photograph or record the proposal on a mobile phone.
If professional photographs are important to you, you may arrange your own photographer, subject to prior approval.
The photographer must be disclosed to Reservations before the booking is confirmed. They may only enter the authorised ground area at the launch site, must follow all safety instructions and must remain on the ground during the flight.
Photographers, friends and family members may not chase the balloon, enter private property or attempt to reach the landing site.
A pre-arranged site visit may be recommended, particularly when an external photographer will be attending. This allows you and the photographer to understand the launch-site layout, safety boundaries and timing before the proposal morning.
Keep the arrangements beautifully simple
Our launch site is a licensed commercial aviation facility, not an event venue. As a commercial balloon operator, we operate within the aviation safety framework overseen by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.
Our engagement offering is designed around incorporating a simple proposal into the authentic balloon safari experience.
We cannot accommodate elaborate installations such as arches, furniture, floral displays, picnic arrangements, extensive decorations or large proposal signs on the launch or landing fields.
Ground signage, banners or large lettering intended to be seen from the balloon cannot be arranged either.
A hot air balloon cannot be steered along a predetermined route. Its direction, altitude and landing area are determined by the wind and weather conditions on the morning. We can therefore never guarantee that a balloon will fly over a particular property, venue, sign or display.
The use of recreational or unlicensed drones is also strictly prohibited near our launch site, landing sites and balloons. Licensed drone operators may apply for written permission from Management, but approval is not automatic.
Social media is filled with carefully staged proposal photographs and videos. A genuine balloon safari is different. Balloon positions, passenger numbers, take-off timing, flight direction and landing locations change from one morning to the next.
Instead of trying to recreate someone else’s photograph, plan a moment that will be meaningful because it is yours.
Give your hot air balloon proposal a Plan B
Hot air ballooning is entirely weather-dependent.
The final decision to fly rests with the pilot and may only be made on the morning once the latest aviation weather and launch conditions have been assessed. The South African Weather Service’s aviation platform provides specialised meteorological information for the aviation industry.
If conditions are unsuitable or unsafe, the flight will be cancelled.
We strongly recommend preparing an alternative proposal plan in case the flight cannot proceed on your intended date. The ring may be ready, but the weather does not accept reservations.
How to arrange your proposal
All proposal arrangements must be discussed and agreed with our Reservations team before the booking is confirmed.
Please provide:
- Your preferred proposal option
- A brief description of how you intend to propose
- Details of any photographer or non-flying guest
- Details of any photography or videography arrangements
- Any special request you would like us to consider
Our team will explain what is operationally possible and record the agreed plan on your reservation. This ensures that the relevant pilot and operational team members are informed before the flight date.
Proposal arrangements cannot be introduced, changed or expanded on the morning of the flight. At that stage, our team must concentrate on passenger check-in, flight documentation, safety management, balloon preparation and boarding.
