A hot air balloon proposal has all the ingredients of a remarkable story: the quiet of early morning, the first light over the Magalies River Valley and the anticipation of a shared adventure. Then, somewhere between the glow of the burners and the traditional sparkling wine celebration, one very important question changes everything.
At Bill Harrop’s ‘Original’ Balloon Safaris, we have been helping passengers celebrate engagements for more than four decades. The proposals that work best are not the most complicated ones. They are carefully arranged, flexible and allowed to become part of the real ballooning experience.
If you are considering proposing during a hot air balloon safari near Johannesburg or Pretoria, here is what you need to know before choosing the moment.
When can you propose?
There are three natural opportunities to pop the question: before the flight, during the flight or after landing. Each creates a very different kind of memory.
1. Before the flight, with the balloons as your backdrop
For many couples, this is the strongest option. Once the balloons have been inflated and are standing upright, there may be a brief window before passengers are called to board. From the designated passenger area, the colourful balloons can create a spectacular backdrop for the proposal.
The advantage is wonderfully practical too: the nervous part is over before take-off. You can then enjoy the flight together, take photographs with the ring in the sky and begin the morning as a newly engaged couple.
The window is short, sometimes only a few minutes, and the launch team cannot delay boarding or stage the moment. Timing, balloon position and the number of balloons operating will depend on the weather and operational requirements that morning.
2. During the flight
There is something undeniably special about asking the question while drifting above the countryside. If this is your preferred option, it must be arranged with Reservations beforehand so that your pilot knows about the plan.
The pilot may indicate a suitable moment, but safe operation of the balloon will always come first. A particular view, altitude, background or exact time cannot be promised. Space in a balloon basket is also limited, so the proposal must be made while standing safely in your allocated compartment. Going down on one knee is not practical in the basket.
3. After landing, during the sparkling wine celebration
After landing, the pilot traditionally serves sparkling wine and orange juice. It is a relaxed, celebratory moment and a lovely setting for the question, especially if you prefer to wait until the flight is complete.
The balloon envelope is normally deflated soon after landing, so an upright balloon cannot be guaranteed as the photographic backdrop. Landing sites are also on private property and cannot be accessed by photographers, family members or other ground-only guests.
Shared flight or private balloon?
A shared balloon flight can be a joyful choice for an engagement. Other passengers often add to the celebration, and someone in the basket may be willing to capture the moment on your phone. Any such help is arranged directly with the fellow passenger and cannot be guaranteed by our team.
A private balloon offers a more exclusive experience, but it is subject to availability, the combined weight of the passengers and the legal loading capacity of the balloon. It is worth remembering that privacy is not always essential to make the proposal feel personal. Once the question has been asked, the rest of the morning becomes your first adventure as an engaged couple.
Who will take the photographs?
Our pilots and ground crew are responsible for safety, balloon preparation and the operation of the flight. We cannot guarantee that a team member will be available to photograph or record a proposal on a mobile phone.
If professional photographs are important to you, your photographer must be disclosed to and approved by Reservations in advance. Photographers must remain within the authorised ground area at the launch site, follow all safety instructions and remain on the ground. They may not chase the balloon or enter the private landing site.
Keep the plan simple
A working balloon launch site is a licensed commercial aviation environment, not an events venue. Elaborate arches, furniture, floral installations, picnic arrangements, signage and large ground messages cannot be accommodated. Drones are strictly prohibited unless written approval has been granted by Management in advance and every required licence and supporting document has been accepted.
Hot air balloons travel with the wind and cannot be steered over a chosen property, sign or display. That unpredictability is part of real ballooning. The best proposal plan works with the experience instead of trying to choreograph every second of it.
Have a weather-friendly Plan B
Hot air balloon flights are entirely weather-dependent. If the pilot determines that conditions are unsuitable or unsafe, the flight will be cancelled. Safety is never negotiable, even on a morning as important as this one.
For that reason, every balloon proposal should have a Plan B. Decide in advance whether you will postpone the proposal until the rebooked flight or use an alternative special moment on the original date. A backup plan does not make the occasion less romantic. It simply prevents the weather from making the decision for you.

Arrange the proposal before you book
Your complete proposal idea must be discussed with our Reservations team before the booking is confirmed. The agreed arrangements are recorded on the reservation so that the pilot and operational team know what to expect.
Proposal plans cannot be introduced, changed or expanded on the morning of the flight. At that stage, the team must focus on check-in, flight documentation, weather assessment, balloon preparation, passenger boarding and safety.
When contacting Reservations, please share:
- whether you would like to propose before, during or after the flight
- a short description of your proposed plan
- details of any photographer or ground-only guest
- any photography or videography request
- any special request you would like the team to consider
Ready to plan the question?
The finest balloon proposals are simple, sincere and flexible. Tell us what you have in mind, and our Reservations team will explain what is practical within the safety and operational requirements of the morning.
Then all that remains is to keep the ring safe, keep the secret, and remember to breathe before you ask.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming you on board.
