← Back to Balloon School

Hot air balloon pilot training combines theoretical knowledge, practical flight instruction and ground-based operational experience. Students must learn how the aircraft works, how weather affects every flight and how to make safe decisions before leaving the ground.

It is a structured aviation training process. Therefore, it should not be confused with a recreational flying lesson or a once-off balloon experience.

A Structured Aviation Training Programme

Formal balloon pilot training must take place through an appropriately approved aviation training organisation. The training programme must also follow the applicable South African Civil Aviation Regulations and technical standards.

Students progress by demonstrating knowledge, practical ability and sound judgement. As a result, completing a certain number of activities does not automatically make someone competent to operate a balloon safely.

Ground School and Theoretical Knowledge

Ground school gives students the knowledge required to plan and conduct balloon flights safely.

Training may cover:

Principles of flight and the behaviour of heated air

Balloon envelopes, baskets, burners and fuel systems

Aircraft instruments and equipment

Meteorology and weather interpretation

Air law and applicable aviation regulations

Airspace and operational restrictions

Navigation, maps and flight planning

Human performance and aviation decision-making

Communication and crew coordination

Emergency procedures and risk management

Students must understand more than how to make a balloon climb or descend. They must also learn when conditions are suitable for flight and when the safest decision is not to launch.

Practical Flight Training

Practical instruction allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a working balloon environment.

Depending on the stage of training, practical instruction may include:

Assessing the launch site and surrounding area

Reviewing weather information and flight conditions

Completing pre-flight inspections

Preparing the basket, burners and fuel system

Assisting with inflation and launch procedures

Controlling climbs, descents and level flight

Interpreting wind direction at different heights

Planning approaches and selecting landing areas

Conducting safe landings

Coordinating with the ground crew

Completing post-flight inspections and operational records

The instructor introduces these responsibilities progressively. Students first observe and assist. Then, as their competence develops, they take on more responsibility under supervision.

Learning Through Ground Crew Operations

Balloon pilots need a thorough understanding of ground operations. For this reason, practical experience starts long before a student takes control in flight.

Ground crew experience teaches students how to prepare equipment, assist with inflation and manage the launch area. It also helps them understand vehicle coordination, balloon recovery and post-flight procedures.

This experience builds respect for the complete operation. In addition, it shows students how every crew member contributes to a safe flight.

Weather and Flight Planning

Weather plays a central role in balloon pilot training. Unlike powered aircraft, a balloon travels with the moving air mass. Pilots therefore need to understand surface conditions, winds at different heights and forecast changes.

Students learn to assess whether conditions remain suitable for a planned flight. They must also consider visibility, terrain, landing options and operational limitations.

Most importantly, good pilots do not treat cancelling a flight as failure. They recognise that deciding not to fly can be the most professional decision of the day.

Safety and Aviation Decision-Making

Technical flying ability is only one part of pilot training. Students must also develop disciplined decision-making skills.

Training includes identifying hazards, considering available options and responding to changing conditions. Students also learn how to manage abnormal or emergency situations calmly and systematically.

An instructor will assess how a student prepares, communicates and makes decisions throughout the operation. Therefore, safe judgement matters just as much as physical aircraft control.

Training Progress Depends on Competence

Balloon training is weather-dependent and competency-based. Consequently, the time required to complete training differs between students.

Progress may depend on:

Suitable flying weather

The student’s availability

The frequency of training

Instructor and aircraft availability

The student’s preparation between lessons

The ability to demonstrate each required competency

Students should prepare for a genuine commitment rather than expecting a quick course completed over a fixed number of weekends.

Examinations and the Practical Flight Test

The licensing pathway includes formal assessments. These may involve theoretical examinations, completed training records and a practical flight test with an appropriately authorised examiner.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority publishes the relevant licensing forms and requirements for the Free Balloon Pilot Licence. However, regulatory and Training Provider requirements may change. Students should therefore work from the current information supplied by their Training Provider.

Training Within a Working Balloon Environment

Balloon School brings together Alpi Aviation and Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris in Skeerpoort, South Africa.

Students gain insight into balloon operations within an established commercial environment. This setting helps connect theoretical learning with the practical realities of planning, crew coordination, aircraft preparation and responsible decision-making.

However, training remains separate from employment. Participation does not guarantee a position with Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris or any other balloon operator.

The Next Step in the Journey

Before enrolling in the full training programme, prospective students must complete the required application and assessment process.

The next Flight Log examines an important part of that process: the compulsory Training Introductory Flight.
