A hot air balloon safari is unlike any other activity. There is no fixed route, no predetermined landing place and no two flights are ever exactly the same. The balloon travels with the wind, turning each flight into a unique journey above the Magalies River Valley.

For first-time passengers, the experience often begins with plenty of questions. How early must you arrive? What should you wear? How long does the experience take? What happens after the balloon lands?

Here is what you can expect when booking a sunrise hot air balloon safari with Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris.

The quick answer

A hot air balloon safari is an early-morning, weather-dependent experience lasting approximately three to four hours from arrival to departure.

The experience includes:

• Pre-flight tea, coffee or hot chocolate
• The preparation and inflation of the balloons

• Return transport from the landing area

Flights take place at sunrise from our private launch site in Skeerpoort, in the Magalies River Valley near Hartbeespoort.

Your morning begins before sunrise

Hot air balloon flights take place shortly after sunrise, when weather conditions are generally at their most suitable for ballooning. Meeting times therefore vary throughout the year according to the time of sunrise.

Passengers arrive at our private Clubhouse Pavilion and Restaurant before dawn. After checking in, you can enjoy tea, coffee or hot chocolate while the pilots and operational team complete their final preparations.

We recommend checking your route in advance and allowing sufficient travelling time. Leaving home ten minutes earlier is far preferable to watching the balloons depart without you.

Watching the balloons come to life

One of the most memorable parts of the morning happens before the flight has even begun.

The balloon envelopes are laid out across the launch field and gradually filled with cold air using powerful fans. Once sufficiently inflated, the burners are ignited and the warm air raises the enormous envelopes into their upright positions.

The sound of the burners, the changing colours in the morning sky and the sight of several balloons standing across the launch field create an impressive start to the experience.

While passengers are welcome to watch the preparations, the launch field remains an active aviation environment. Always follow the instructions of the pilots and ground crew and remain within the designated passenger areas.

The safety briefing and boarding process

Before boarding, the pilot will provide a safety briefing explaining how to enter the basket, where to stand during the flight and which landing position to adopt.

Balloon baskets have high sides and do not have doors. Passengers must therefore be able to climb into and out of the basket and remain standing for the duration of the flight.

Your pilot and crew will guide you through the boarding process. It is important to listen carefully and follow all instructions, particularly when preparing to land.

What does a hot air balloon flight feel like?

Many first-time passengers expect ballooning to feel similar to travelling in an aeroplane or helicopter. In reality, it is a very different experience.

Because the balloon travels with the surrounding air, there is usually little sensation of wind inside the basket. The take-off is often so gradual that passengers only realise they are airborne when the launch field begins to fall away beneath them.

The flight offers changing views across the Magalies River Valley, with the Magaliesberg mountain range, farmland, rivers, dams and surrounding countryside visible from above.

This is a scenic balloon safari and not a game-viewing flight. The pleasure lies in seeing a familiar South African landscape from a completely different perspective.

There is no fixed flight path

A hot air balloon does not travel along a scheduled route. The pilot can control the balloon’s altitude, but its direction is determined by the wind at different heights.

This means that we cannot guarantee that a balloon will fly over a particular property, landmark or section of the valley. The landing location will also differ from one flight to the next.

The pilot continuously assesses the available wind directions, suitable landing areas and surrounding conditions throughout the flight. Our ground crew follows the balloon by road and meets the passengers after landing.

The unpredictability is not a flaw in ballooning. It is part of what makes every flight unique.

How long is the flight?

A hot air balloon flight is approximately one hour, although the exact duration may vary according to the weather, available landing sites and the pilot’s operational decisions.

The complete experience takes approximately three to four hours from arrival at the Clubhouse Pavilion until breakfast has concluded.

When planning the rest of your day, avoid arranging another appointment immediately afterwards. Ballooning follows the weather and landscape rather than an exact minute-by-minute timetable.

What happens when the balloon lands?

Every landing is different. Some are exceptionally gentle, while others may involve a few bumps or the basket tipping onto its side.

Before landing, the pilot will instruct passengers to adopt the correct landing position. This protects passengers and helps keep everyone secure while the balloon returns to the ground.

Remain in the basket until the pilot confirms that it is safe to exit. Even after landing, the balloon may still be affected by the wind, so passengers must continue following the pilot’s instructions.

The traditional post-flight celebration

Once the balloon is safely on the ground, passengers can celebrate the flight with sparkling wine and orange juice.

A non-alcoholic sparkling wine option is available for passengers who do not consume alcohol. Please advise our Reservations team of this requirement when making your booking.

After the celebration, our vehicles transport passengers back to the Clubhouse Pavilion.

Breakfast at the Clubhouse Pavilion

The morning concludes with a full English buffet breakfast at our Clubhouse Pavilion and Restaurant.

This provides an opportunity to relax, enjoy breakfast and talk about the flight with your fellow passengers. Each passenger also receives a personally signed Certificate of Bravery as a memento of the experience.

The breakfast is part of the balloon safari and is not an optional extra. A flight with Bill Harrop’s is intended to be a complete morning experience, not simply an hour in the air.

What should you wear?

Dress for the early-morning ground temperature and wear comfortable outdoor clothing.

We recommend:

• Closed, comfortable shoes
• Long trousers
• A warm jacket during the cooler months
• Layers that can be removed as the morning warms
• A hat or cap to protect your head from the heat of the burners
• Sunscreen throughout the year

Avoid high heels, open shoes, flowing garments or clothing that restricts movement. The launch and landing areas are natural outdoor environments and may include uneven ground, grass or damp soil.

You do not need to wear exceptionally heavy clothing inside the basket. The burners produce heat, and the balloon travels with the wind rather than against it.

Who can participate?

Passenger safety remains the deciding consideration in every booking.

Children must be at least seven years old and at least 1.3 metres tall. Both requirements must be met. Children must also be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the duration of the activity and will be measured at check-in.

Pregnant passengers are not permitted to participate in a hot air balloon flight.

Passengers must be physically able to climb into and out of the basket, remain standing for approximately one hour and adopt the required landing position. Anyone with a medical condition, mobility limitation or recent injury should discuss this with our Reservations team before making payment.

Passenger names, surnames and accurate weights are required when booking. This information is necessary for safe balloon allocation and flight planning.

Hot air ballooning is weather-dependent

Every flight is subject to suitable weather conditions.

The final decision to fly rests with the pilot and is based on aviation weather information and the actual conditions at the launch site. Wind speed, visibility, rain, thunderstorms and other factors can affect whether a safe flight is possible.

Although a weather cancellation is naturally disappointing, the pilot’s decision is made for the safety of passengers, crew and equipment.

If you are travelling from further afield, consider booking flexible accommodation and avoiding non-refundable arrangements that depend entirely on the flight taking place.

The Winter Fun Flights 2026 brought experienced hot air balloon pilots, crews and ballooning enthusiasts together in the Magalies River Valley from 17 to 19 July 2026. Hosted by Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris, the weekend celebrated friendly competition, flying skill, ballooning camaraderie and 45 years of ballooning heritage.

The event brought together sports balloonists, commercial pilots, hobbyists, crew members and friends from the South African ballooning community for a weekend of friendly competition, skilful flying and good old-fashioned ballooning camaraderie.

Held during our 45th anniversary year, the Winter Fun Flight Fest was also a celebration of the people, traditions and shared passion that have shaped ballooning in South Africa over many decades.

Winter Fun Flights 2026 Takes to the Sky

The pilots were presented with a series of challenges designed to test their ability to read the wind, control their balloons and make sound decisions throughout each flight.

The competition was never simply about reaching a destination. Pilots needed to demonstrate judgement, patience, timing, speed control and, above all, safe and responsible flying.

Saturday morning’s competition combined two recognised ballooning tasks: Judge Declared Goals and a Calculated Rate of Approach.

Three designated landing goals were available, and each pilot was required to declare which goal they intended to reach before take-off. They then had to manage their speed and direction carefully, aiming to land at the selected field within the designated arrival period.

Points were awarded for reaching the correct or an alternative field, together with points based on the balloon’s arrival time. GPS safety tracks were used to assist with the scoring and auditing of the results.

It was an entertaining challenge for spectators, but a demanding exercise for the pilots, who had to work with the wind rather than against it. As every balloonist knows, the wind always has the final say.

Flying Challenges at the Winter Fun Flights 2026

Hot air ballooning is entirely weather dependent, and the safety of pilots, crew, passengers and spectators must always come before competition.

Unfortunately, Saturday afternoon’s fly-in challenge was cancelled due to strong winds.

The challenge scheduled for Sunday morning was also cancelled because of strong winds and a wind direction that was not conducive to a safe flight.

Although everyone would have loved another opportunity to take to the skies, the decision not to fly was the correct one. Knowing when not to launch is just as important as knowing how to fly, and responsible decision-making remains one of the most important skills in aviation.

The final competition results were therefore calculated from the official challenge elements that could be completed safely.

Winter Fun Flights 2026 Placements and Prize Winners

Following the completion and auditing of the official competition scores, the final placements were announced.

First place: Ian Schilz

Ian Schilz took first place in the Winter Fun Flight Fest 2026.

His prize was a two-night stay for two adults sharing at the beautiful SiriMiri Cottage in Dullstroom.

Second place: Juandre Janse van Vuuren

Juandre Janse van Vuuren achieved overall second place.

His prize was a one-night stay for two adults at Leopard Lodge.

Third place: Felicity Clegg

Felicity Clegg secured third place overall.

Her prize was a one-night stay for two people sharing at the Indaba Hotel, including breakfast at Epsom Restaurant and dinner at Chief’s Boma, excluding drinks.

Hot air balloon rides in South Africa offer one of the country’s most unforgettable travel experiences. Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply looking for a unique sunrise adventure, Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris has been creating lifelong memories since 1981.

Earlier this month, we received a heartfelt email from Germany.

While sorting through old photographs, Margit stumbled across pictures from a hot air balloon flight she had taken with Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris during the early 1980s. Instantly, the memories came flooding back.

“It´s been a wonderful experience of my lifetime.”

Her words reminded us of something very special.

For 45 years, thousands of guests have watched the sun rise over the Magaliesberg from the basket of one of our balloons. Some experienced it only a few weeks ago. Others, like Margit, still remember their flight more than four decades later.

As we celebrate 45 years of creating unforgettable sunrise experiences, it’s fascinating to look back at how much has changed, and how much has stayed exactly the same.

A Young Bill Harrop and the Early Days

When Bill Harrop first introduced commercial hot air balloon rides in South Africa in 1981, ballooning was still relatively unknown in the country.

There were no smartphones, no GPS navigation, and certainly no social media.

Weather forecasts were far less sophisticated than they are today, communication relied heavily on landline telephones, and many operational decisions came from years of experience and careful observation of the skies.

Guests arrived carrying film cameras rather than mobile phones, hoping that their roll of 36 photographs would capture the magic of the morning.

The operation itself was much smaller, but the dream was the same: to introduce people to the incredible peace and beauty of floating silently above the Magaliesberg at sunrise. That vision still guides us today.

Preparing for flight looked very different in the early 1980s, but the excitement of watching a balloon come to life has never changed.

Today’s flights combine decades of aviation experience with modern equipment, delivering the same unforgettable sunrise adventure that began in 1981.

Bigger Balloons, Better Technology

Modern hot air balloons have come a long way over the past four decades.

Today’s balloons are built using advanced, lightweight materials designed to withstand extreme temperatures while remaining incredibly durable. Burners are more efficient, equipment is more reliable, and every component is manufactured to exceptionally high aviation standards.

Our fleet has also grown to accommodate everything from intimate couples celebrating a special occasion to large corporate groups and international tour groups.

Although the equipment has evolved significantly, the experience remains wonderfully simple.

The only engine is the wind.

Safety Has Never Stood Still

One of the greatest changes over the past 45 years has been the continuous advancement of aviation safety.

Every commercial flight operated by Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris is conducted under strict regulations set by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.

Our pilots undergo extensive training and maintain the qualifications required to operate commercial passenger flights. Every balloon receives regular inspections and maintenance, and every flight begins with detailed weather assessments before a single balloon leaves the ground.

Modern forecasting technology allows our pilots to monitor weather patterns with remarkable accuracy, helping us make informed decisions long before take-off.

While technology has improved enormously, one principle has never changed: If conditions are not safe to fly, we simply don’t fly. Safety has always come first.

From Film Cameras to Smartphones

One of the biggest differences between 1981 and today is how guests capture their memories.

Forty years ago, passengers carefully chose when to press the shutter button, hoping each photograph would turn out perfectly after being developed days later. Today, guests often arrive with smartphones, action cameras and professional photography equipment, capturing hundreds of images during a single morning. Ironically, something else has remained remarkably consistent. Many guests eventually lower their cameras.

There comes a moment during almost every flight when people simply stop taking photographs, look out across the valleys below, and quietly absorb the experience for themselves.

The mountains below may look exactly as they did in 1981, but every sunrise tells a different story.

Winter mornings bring crystal-clear visibility stretching for kilometres. Summer offers lush green valleys and dramatic cloud formations.

For 45 years, we’ve had the privilege of sharing South African sunrises with guests from around the world. Some flew with a young Bill Harrop in the early 1980s. Others are only now planning their very first flight.

This special event will bring together a number of local and international hot air balloon pilots for a weekend dedicated to flying, friendship, fun challenges and the shared passion that unites balloonists around the world.

For over four decades, Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris has welcomed guests to experience the magic of hot air ballooning above one of South Africa’s most scenic landscapes. The Winter Flight Fest continues this tradition by celebrating not only the adventure of flight, but also the people who make ballooning such a unique and enduring aviation community.

We designed the event as a relaxed “mini meet” rather than a formal competition. Pilots will have the opportunity to fly in the spectacular winter conditions for which the Magalies River Valley is renowned, while participating in a series of light-hearted ballooning challenges and activities.

The emphasis is not on winning trophies or setting records. Instead, the focus is on camaraderie, knowledge sharing and enjoying the privilege of flying alongside fellow balloonists.

Participants will compete for a selection of fun prizes and bragging rights, but the true reward lies in the friendships forged, stories shared and memories created throughout the weekend.
