Where do our hot air balloon rides take place?

Our flights take place over the Magalies River Valley, west of Hartbeespoort Dam.

Guests meet at our private launch site and Clubhouse Pavilion in Skeerpoort, situated along the R560. This provides a comfortable base for check-in, pre-flight refreshments and breakfast following the flight.

The surrounding landscape includes farmland, natural bushveld, river systems and views towards the Magaliesberg mountain range. The scenery changes with the seasons, which means no two flights are ever exactly the same.

Although the experience is traditionally called a balloon safari, the Magalies River Valley is not a game reserve and game viewing is not included.

How far is it from Johannesburg and Pretoria?

Our Magalies River Valley launch site is conveniently situated for guests travelling from Johannesburg, Pretoria, Hartbeespoort and the surrounding areas.

Approximate travelling distances are:

• Approximately 60 kilometres from Sandton
• Approximately 55 kilometres from Pretoria
• Around one hour’s drive from many parts of Johannesburg and Pretoria

Actual travelling time will depend on your departure point, traffic and road conditions. Because balloon flights take place shortly after sunrise, guests usually travel during the early morning when the roads are quieter.

We recommend checking your route in advance and allowing additional time. Ballooning follows the sunrise, and unfortunately the balloon cannot wait for late arrivals.

What time must guests arrive?

Guests arrive before sunrise at the check-in time provided in their reservation confirmation.

The exact check-in time changes during the year because sunrise times vary from season to season. Your confirmed booking information will include the applicable meeting and check-in time for your flight date.

Please arrive punctually. The pre-flight preparations, safety briefing and balloon inflation form part of the experience, and the flight must launch within the appropriate weather window.

What does the balloon experience include?

A hot air balloon flight with Bill Harrop’s is more than the time spent in the air. It is a complete morning experience that includes:

• Pre-flight tea, coffee/hot chocolate
• The opportunity to watch the balloon being prepared and inflated
• An approximately one-hour sunrise hot air balloon flight
• Traditional post-flight refreshments after landing
• A full buffet breakfast at our private Clubhouse Pavilion
• A personalised Certificate of Bravery

The balloon travels with the wind, so the precise flight path and landing place are different each morning. Our ground crew follows the balloon and meets it after landing.

How long should guests set aside?

Please set aside approximately three to four hours for the complete experience.

This includes check-in, pre-flight preparations, the flight, retrieval after landing and breakfast at the Clubhouse Pavilion.

We recommend avoiding appointments or tightly scheduled plans immediately afterwards. Ballooning is weather-dependent, and the morning’s timing can vary according to flying and landing conditions.

How much do hot air balloon rides cost?

At the time of publication, our shared balloon experience starts from R3395.00 per person (sharing with other passengers).

The ticket includes the pre-flight refreshments, approximately one hour in the balloon, traditional post-flight refreshments, buffet breakfast and Certificate of Bravery.

Rates, availability and package conditions may change, so guests should request the latest information before making arrangements.

What happens if the weather is unsuitable?

Hot air ballooning is entirely dependent on suitable weather conditions.

Our pilots assess factors such as wind speed, visibility, cloud cover and the possibility of rain before every flight. The final decision to fly always rests with the pilot and is made with passenger and crew safety as the first priority.

A clear-looking morning does not necessarily mean conditions are suitable for ballooning. Equally, weather at the launch site may differ from conditions in Johannesburg or Pretoria.

If Bill Harrop’s cancels a Magalies River Valley flight because of unsuitable weather, the applicable tickets may be rebooked in accordance with their terms and conditions.

Guests should therefore avoid planning a balloon flight on the final morning of a visit to Gauteng. Where possible, allow an alternative date in case the weather does not cooperate.

Can children participate?

Children may fly if they meet both of the following minimum requirements:

• They must be at least seven years old
• They must be at least 1.30 metres tall

Both requirements must be met. Children must also be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

The height requirement is important because passengers must be able to see over the edge of the basket, follow the pilot’s instructions and adopt the required landing position safely. Children may be measured during check-in.

Parents should provide the age, height and weight of each child when enquiring.

Is a balloon flight physically demanding?

Passengers must be able to stand for approximately one hour, climb into and out of the basket and hold the landing position instructed by the pilot.

Balloon landings can take place on uneven terrain and may occasionally be firm. Anyone with a recent operation, injury, significant mobility limitation or medical condition should disclose this before making payment.

Pregnant passengers are not permitted to fly.

Why do hot air balloons fly at sunrise? The answer lies in the weather conditions typically found during the early morning, when the atmosphere is generally cooler and more stable.

Passengers usually arrive before dawn, watch the balloons inflate as the sky begins to brighten and take off shortly after sunrise. The timing is not chosen simply because sunrise photographs look beautiful, although that is certainly a welcome advantage.

As the sun rises and begins heating the ground, air movement gradually changes. These changing conditions can create stronger winds, rising columns of warm air and turbulence that may be less suitable for passenger balloon operations.

For Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris, flights take place at sunrise only. Here is why the early start is an essential part of the experience.

Why Do Hot Air Balloons Fly at Sunrise? The Quick Answer

Hot air balloons generally fly around sunrise because:

• Surface winds are often lighter in the early morning
• The atmosphere is usually more stable
• The ground has not yet been strongly heated by the sun
• Thermal activity is generally limited
• Pilots can assess the developing conditions from the launch site
• Cooler air can support more efficient balloon performance
• The flight can normally be completed before daytime heating becomes established

Sunrise does not automatically guarantee suitable flying weather. Wind, rain, fog, visibility, thunderstorms and other aviation weather conditions must still be assessed before every flight.

The final decision to fly always rests with the pilot.

How does a hot air balloon fly?

A hot air balloon flies because the air inside its envelope is heated by the burners.

As the air inside the balloon becomes warmer than the surrounding atmosphere, it becomes less dense. This creates lift and allows the balloon to rise.

The pilot controls the balloon’s altitude by heating the air inside the envelope or allowing it to cool. However, a balloon does not have an engine or steering system that allows it to follow a predetermined route.

Instead, it travels with the wind.

Pilots use their knowledge of the local area, aviation weather and the different wind directions available at various altitudes to manage the flight. This makes the condition and movement of the surrounding atmosphere especially important.

What happens to the atmosphere overnight?

After sunset, the ground begins losing the heat it absorbed during the day. As the ground cools, it also cools the air immediately above it.

During a clear night with light winds, this cooling can help create a more stable layer of air near the surface. By the time morning arrives, the atmosphere may be relatively settled.

The Federal Aviation Administration’s Balloon Flying Handbook explains that the Earth’s surface heats during the day and cools at night. It also notes that convection develops when sun-warmed ground heats the air above it, causing warmer air to rise.

This daily cycle of heating and cooling is one of the main reasons balloon flights are planned for the early morning.

What changes after sunrise?

Once the sun rises, it begins heating the surface of the Earth.

Different surfaces heat at different rates. Dry soil, grass, rocks, trees, buildings and bodies of water do not all respond to sunlight in the same way.

As warmer areas heat the air above them, pockets or columns of warm air begin to rise. These are commonly known as thermals.

Cooler surrounding air moves in to replace the rising air, creating vertical and horizontal movement within the atmosphere. As daytime heating becomes stronger, these movements can become more active and less predictable.

Glider pilots actively seek thermal activity because rising air can help keep their aircraft aloft. Balloon pilots generally prefer to complete passenger flights before strong thermal activity develops.

A balloon is a large, relatively slow-moving aircraft that travels within the surrounding air mass. Strong thermals, gusts and turbulent air can affect its climb, descent and landing.

Why lighter surface winds matter

Wind speed at ground level is particularly important during balloon preparation, inflation, take-off and landing.

Before launch, the balloon envelope is spread across the field and filled with cold air. Once it is sufficiently inflated, the burners are used to heat the air and raise the envelope into its upright position.

Stronger or gusty surface winds can make this process more difficult. The envelope presents an enormous surface area to the wind, while the basket and passengers remain close to the ground.

Surface conditions are also important when landing. The pilot must identify a suitable landing area and consider wind speed, terrain, obstacles, access and the space available.

A balloon landing may involve some movement after the basket first touches the ground. Stronger winds can increase the speed across the ground and the distance needed to bring the aircraft to a stop.

This is why a morning that appears perfectly pleasant for an outdoor walk may not necessarily be suitable for a commercial balloon flight.

Does cooler air help the balloon fly?

Temperature also affects balloon performance.

A hot air balloon creates lift through the temperature difference between the heated air inside the envelope and the cooler air outside it. Cooler, denser morning air can provide favourable performance conditions.

This does not mean balloons cannot operate during warmer seasons. Bill Harrop’s operates throughout the year, subject to suitable weather conditions.

However, seasonal temperatures, passenger weights, balloon capacity and atmospheric conditions all form part of flight planning. Accurate passenger weights are therefore required when making a reservation.

They are not requested out of curiosity. They are an essential part of safe aircraft and passenger allocation.

Why not fly later in the morning?

Passengers sometimes ask whether a flight can simply be delayed until 08:00, 09:00 or even later.

Unfortunately, hot air balloon flight times cannot be moved according to breakfast preferences, hotel check-out times or the convenience of a special occasion.

By later in the morning:

• The ground may already be warming
• Thermal activity may be developing
• Surface winds may be increasing
• Wind direction may be changing
• Gusts may become more frequent
• Landing conditions may be less favourable

The exact rate at which conditions change differs from one day to the next and from one season to another. This is why the pilot considers the complete weather picture rather than relying on the time shown on a clock.

The aim is to prepare, launch, fly and land within the most suitable operational window available that morning.

Why not fly at sunset?

In some parts of the world, balloon operators may conduct late-afternoon or evening flights when local conditions permit.

Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris does not offer sunset balloon flights. Our commercial passenger flights take place at sunrise only.

By late afternoon, the atmosphere has been influenced by a full day of heating. Even when surface winds appear to calm near sunset, conditions at different altitudes may remain unsuitable or may not provide a sufficiently reliable operational window.

A sunset flight would also require the balloon to take off, complete its flight and land before darkness. Because a balloon’s route and landing location cannot be predetermined, the available daylight becomes another important limitation.

Our sunrise-only operation provides time for a properly planned flight, landing and retrieval in daylight.

Does sunrise guarantee good weather?

No. Sunrise often provides the most suitable part of the day for ballooning, but it does not guarantee that a flight will take place.

Conditions that may prevent a flight include:

• Strong surface winds
• Excessive winds at flight altitude
• Gusty or rapidly changing winds
• Rain
• Thunderstorms
• Poor visibility
• Low cloud
• Fog
• Unfavourable wind direction
• Unsafe or unsuitable landing conditions
• Approaching weather systems

Weather forecasts are an important planning tool, but the final decision may only be possible after the pilot has reviewed the latest aviation weather and assessed the actual conditions at the launch site.

A general weather application showing sunshine is not sufficient for balloon-flight planning. Such applications are designed for everyday public use and may not show the detailed wind, visibility, cloud and atmospheric information required for aviation decisions.

Why can the flight be cancelled when the weather looks fine?

This is one of the most frustrating parts of weather-dependent aviation.

Passengers may arrive to find clear skies and very little wind at the Clubhouse, yet the pilot may still decide that the flight cannot proceed.

Conditions at the launch site represent only one part of the planned operation. The pilot must also consider:

• Wind at different altitudes
• Conditions along the likely flight direction
• The availability of suitable landing areas
• Forecast changes during the flight
• Weather systems approaching the area
• Ground conditions after recent rain
• Visibility and cloud development

A balloon may launch in one place and land several kilometres away. The complete flight area must therefore be considered.

The decision is not based on whether the morning looks attractive from the veranda. It is based on whether the pilot believes the entire flight can be conducted safely.

Why does the meeting time change during the year?

Sunrise does not occur at the same time throughout the year.

During the South African summer, sunrise takes place earlier. Winter sunrises occur later. Passenger meeting times therefore change according to the season and the operational requirements for the flight.

Your reservation confirmation will state the required check-in time for your flight date.

Passengers should not rely on a meeting time from:

• A previous flight
• An old email
• A friend’s reservation
• A social media post
• A general time found through an online search

Always use the time provided in your current reservation confirmation.

Why must passengers arrive on time?

The pilot and crew work within a limited morning weather window.

Before take-off, the team must complete:

• Aircraft and equipment preparations
• Aviation weather assessments
• Passenger check-in
• Passenger and weight verification
• Balloon allocation
• Operational documentation
• The passenger safety briefing
• Balloon inflation
• Boarding

Late arrivals cannot simply be added after the balloon is prepared to depart. Delaying the operation for one passenger may affect every other passenger and reduce the suitable flying time available to the pilot.

Plan your route in advance, allow for road conditions and arrive at the scheduled check-in time.

What can passengers expect from the early start?

The pre-dawn arrival is part of the balloon-safari experience.

Passengers check in at our Clubhouse Pavilion and Restaurant, where tea, coffee and hot chocolate are served while the morning preparations are completed.

As the sky begins to brighten, the balloon envelopes are laid out and inflated across the launch field. The burners are ignited, the balloons rise into their upright positions and passengers are called forward for boarding.

The approximately one-hour flight is followed by sparkling wine and orange juice after landing, return transport to the Clubhouse Pavilion and a full English buffet breakfast.

The complete experience takes approximately three to four hours.

Sunrise is part of safe balloon operation

Hot air balloons do not fly at sunrise merely for dramatic photographs.

The early timing is closely connected to atmospheric stability, surface winds, thermal development, landing conditions and the daylight available for the complete operation.

There will always be mornings when the alarm feels rather ambitious. Once the balloons begin to inflate against the first light over the Magalies River Valley, however, the reason for the early start becomes considerably easier to understand.

Obtaining a Balloon Private Pilot Licence is a significant achievement. However, it does not authorise a pilot to conduct commercial passenger flights or fly for hire or reward.

Moving into commercial ballooning requires further experience, operational training and formal assessment. A pilot must also learn to work within the systems, procedures and responsibilities of a licensed commercial balloon operator.

The Private Pilot Licence Is the Foundation

The private licence establishes the pilot’s fundamental flying skills and aviation knowledge.

During private pilot training, students learn about meteorology, navigation, air law, balloon systems, flight planning and operational safety. They also complete practical instruction, authorised solo flying, examinations and a formal skills test.

Once licensed, the pilot may exercise the privileges attached to that licence and the relevant balloon ratings. However, the pilot may not conduct commercial passenger operations.

The private licence is therefore the beginning of the professional journey, not the final qualification.

Building Experience as Pilot in Command

After obtaining the private licence, a pilot who intends to progress towards commercial operations must continue building experience as Pilot in Command.

For balloons up to 120,000 cubic feet, the current commercial progression requirement includes at least 100 hours as Pilot in Command, followed by supervised operational flying and the applicable competency assessment. Requirements increase when progressing to larger balloon classes.

These hours are not simply a number to be collected in a logbook. They allow the pilot to develop sound judgement across different weather conditions, launch sites, landing areas and operational situations.

Experience teaches pilots how to:

• Interpret changing weather conditions.
• Select suitable launch and landing areas.
• Manage climb and descent rates.
• Navigate using the available winds.
• Coordinate effectively with the ground crew.
• Make conservative safety decisions.
• Handle abnormal or unexpected situations.
• Maintain accurate flight and training records.

A commercial pilot carries passengers who rely entirely on the pilot’s judgement. For this reason, experience must demonstrate genuine competence, not simply the passage of time.

Moving Towards Commercial Balloon Operations

The commercial pathway includes additional training, supervised operational experience and competency assessments.

The exact requirements depend on the balloon class, the intended operation and the current South African Civil Aviation Authority requirements. Training towards a licence, rating or commercial privilege must take place through an appropriately approved Aviation Training Organisation.

The progression may include:

• Additional theoretical and practical training.
• A valid aviation medical certificate appropriate to the intended operation.
• Further Pilot in Command experience.
• Supervised commercial operational flights.
• Training on the applicable balloon class.
• Competency sign-offs and skills testing.
• Current radiotelephony and licensing requirements.
• Submission of the required records and application documents.

Completing one requirement does not automatically qualify the pilot for commercial operations. Each stage must be completed, assessed and recorded correctly.

Learning Commercial Operations

A commercial balloon flight involves responsibilities that extend beyond controlling the balloon.

The pilot must understand the operator’s approved procedures and work effectively with the operations team. This includes passenger management, ground-crew coordination, aircraft documentation, weather assessment and operational decision-making.

Commercial pilots must be able to:

• Conduct passenger safety briefings clearly.
• Supervise passenger boarding and landing positions.
• Coordinate inflation, launch and recovery procedures.
• Work within the operator’s approved limitations.
• Communicate effectively with crew and operational personnel.
• Make decisions that place safety ahead of schedules or commercial pressure.
• Manage passengers calmly during changing conditions.
• Complete the required post-flight records and reports.

A smooth passenger experience may look effortless. Behind it, however, sits a disciplined aviation operation involving planning, teamwork and accountability.

Progressing to Larger Balloons

Commercial balloon pilots may eventually operate balloons designed to carry larger passenger groups.

Larger balloons bring additional responsibilities. They respond differently during inflation, flight and landing, while the increased passenger capacity also requires stronger communication and operational management.

Pilots must therefore obtain the experience, training and competency approval required for the relevant balloon class. Progression is based on demonstrated ability and regulatory compliance. It is never simply assumed because a pilot already holds a licence.

The Pilot and the Commercial Operator

Holding the appropriate pilot qualification does not allow someone to establish or conduct commercial passenger operations independently.

Commercial flights must take place within the structure of an appropriately licensed operator. The operator is responsible for approved procedures, aircraft maintenance, crew training, operational control, insurance and regulatory compliance.

The pilot must work within those systems and remain accountable for the safe conduct of each flight.

This is one of the most important differences between recreational and commercial ballooning. Commercial flying combines individual piloting skill with the standards and oversight of a professional aviation operation.

How Long Does the Progression Take?

There is no fixed calendar date by which every pilot will become commercially qualified.

Balloon training and experience-building depend on weather, student progress, aircraft availability, instructor availability and operational opportunities. Some pilots progress steadily, while others require more time to develop the necessary competence and judgement.

The goal is not to qualify as quickly as possible. The goal is to become a safe, capable and dependable commercial balloon pilot.

Does Commercial Training Guarantee Employment?

No aviation training programme can guarantee employment.

Commercial opportunities depend on the pilot’s qualifications, experience, medical fitness, operational competence and the availability of suitable positions. Operators may also apply their own recruitment, induction and proficiency requirements.

Students should therefore approach commercial training as a professional aviation commitment, not as a guaranteed route to employment.

A Structured Aviation Training Programme

Formal balloon pilot training must take place through an appropriately approved aviation training organisation. The training programme must also follow the applicable South African Civil Aviation Regulations and technical standards.

Students progress by demonstrating knowledge, practical ability and sound judgement. As a result, completing a certain number of activities does not automatically make someone competent to operate a balloon safely.

Ground School and Theoretical Knowledge

Ground school gives students the knowledge required to plan and conduct balloon flights safely.

Training may cover:

• Principles of flight and the behaviour of heated air
• Balloon envelopes, baskets, burners and fuel systems

Students should prepare for a genuine commitment rather than expecting a quick course completed over a fixed number of weekends.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority publishes the relevant licensing forms and requirements for the Free Balloon Pilot Licence. However, regulatory and Training Provider requirements may change. Students should therefore work from the current information supplied by their Training Provider.

Training Within a Working Balloon Environment

Hot air balloon pilot training is open to people from many different backgrounds. However, applicants must meet specific academic, medical, physical and administrative requirements before they can begin formal training.

Meeting the entry requirements does not mean that someone already qualifies for a pilot licence. Instead, it confirms that the applicant may proceed through the Balloon School’s pre-enrolment and assessment process.

South African aviation regulations refer to the entry-level balloon licence as a Free Balloon Pilot Licence. Within the ballooning industry, people commonly refer to it as a Balloon Private Pilot Licence or Balloon PPL.

The Balloon PPL is a non-commercial aviation licence. Therefore, applicants who eventually want to fly passengers for reward must first complete the private licensing stage and later meet the additional requirements for commercial balloon operations.

Minimum Academic Requirements

Applicants must provide proof of Grade 12, an NQF Level 4 qualification or an accepted equivalent.

Applicants with qualifications obtained outside South Africa may need to provide a South African Qualifications Authority evaluation. This allows the Training Provider to confirm that the qualification meets the required academic level.

In addition, applicants must have sufficient English proficiency to understand aviation instruction, safety briefings, study material, examinations and operational communication.

Applicants must meet the minimum age requirements that apply at the relevant stage of training and licensing.

The pre-enrolment application requires a certified copy of the applicant’s South African identity document or passport. International applicants may also need to provide valid visa, study-permit or residency documentation.

Because licensing requirements can change, the Training Provider will confirm the applicable age and documentation requirements during the application review.

Balloon pilot training involves active participation on the ground and in the air. Consequently, applicants must meet the aviation medical requirements that apply to the relevant training and licensing stage.

An aviation medical examination must be completed by an appropriately designated aviation medical examiner. The medical process may include additional reports, certificates or examinations when required.

Applicants must disclose any medical condition, recent surgery, medication, previous medical restriction or other information that could affect safe participation. Hiding relevant medical information can place the applicant, instructor, crew and others at risk.

Ballooning does not require the physique of a professional athlete. Nevertheless, students must be able to participate safely in practical training.

Applicants may need to demonstrate that they can:

• Climb into and out of a balloon basket
• Stand for the expected flight and training period
• Move safely across uneven ground
• Assist with practical balloon operations
• Follow instructions around burners, fuel systems and moving equipment
• Participate safely during take-off, flight and landing procedures

Applicants who require support or accommodation must disclose this during the pre-enrolment process. The Training Provider can then assess whether the requested support is practical and compatible with aviation safety.

Applicants should prepare the supporting documents listed in the current Balloon School pre-enrolment application.

Depending on the applicant and training stage, these may include:

• Certified identity document or passport
• Passport photographs
• Proof of Grade 12, NQF Level 4 or equivalent qualification
• SAQA evaluation for a foreign qualification
• Aviation medical documentation, when applicable
• Previous pilot licence or logbook, if applicable
• Visa or study-permit documentation
• Motivational letter
• Copies of relevant academic qualifications
• Additional documents requested during the application review

Submitting an application without the required documents may delay the review process.

Hot air balloon pilot training is competency-based and weather-dependent. Therefore, applicants must have realistic expectations about scheduling and completion.

Suitable flying conditions cannot be guaranteed on a specific date. Flying lessons, briefings and assessments may also be postponed because of weather, safety, operational or regulatory requirements.

Applicants should disclose their general availability, expected travel arrangements and any periods during which they cannot attend training.

Before formal acceptance and the commencement of flight training, every applicant must complete a compulsory Training Introductory Flight with the Training Provider.

The introductory flight allows the applicant to experience the training environment, ask practical questions and gain a realistic understanding of balloon operations. At the same time, it allows the Training Provider to assess the applicant’s basic suitability and approach to aviation training.

However, completing the introductory flight does not guarantee acceptance into the Balloon School.

The Balloon School reviews every application individually. As a result, acceptance depends on more than submitting a form or paying a fee.

The review may consider:

• Eligibility and supporting documentation
• Medical fitness and safe participation
• Academic preparation
• Availability and commitment
• Conduct during the introductory briefing and flight
• Capacity within the training programme
• Operational and regulatory requirements

The Training Provider may request further information, clarification or documentation before making a final decision.

Licensing and training requirements remain subject to the current South African Civil Aviation Regulations, applicable SACAA technical standards and Training Provider requirements.

Applicants who believe they meet the entry requirements can begin by completing the Balloon School pre-enrolment application and submitting the required supporting documents.

For aspiring hot air balloon pilots, the first formal licensing step is usually the Balloon Private Pilot Licence, commonly referred to as the Balloon PPL.

A Balloon PPL is a regulated aviation licence. It is not a recreational certificate, a short course or simply proof that someone has completed a few flying lessons. The licence confirms that the holder has completed the required theoretical and practical training and demonstrated the competence needed to operate a hot air balloon privately, subject to the applicable licence privileges and restrictions.

The Balloon PPL allows a qualified pilot to fly within the privileges of a private pilot licence. It does not permit the holder to conduct commercial passenger flights or receive payment for acting as a commercial balloon pilot.

For many students, the Balloon PPL is the beginning of a much longer aviation journey. Some pilots train because they want to fly privately, while others intend to gain experience and eventually progress towards commercial balloon operations.

Balloon pilot training combines theoretical study with practical instruction. Students must learn far more than how to make a balloon climb or descend.

More specifically, training may include:

• Air law and aviation procedures
• Meteorology and weather interpretation
• Navigation and flight planning
• Balloon systems and equipment
• Pre-flight preparation and safety checks
• Inflation and deflation procedures
• Burner operation and fuel management
• Practical flight instruction
• Landing preparation and decision-making
• Crew coordination and retrieval operations
• Emergency procedures and aviation safety

In addition, students develop the judgement required to decide when conditions are suitable for flight. In ballooning, choosing not to fly can be every bit as important as knowing how to fly.

Balloon PPL Versus Commercial Pilot Licence

A Balloon PPL is a non-commercial licence. A pilot who wishes to fly fare-paying passengers or work within commercial balloon operations must meet the additional experience, medical, training, examination and licensing requirements applicable to commercial balloon pilots.

However, obtaining a Balloon PPL does not automatically qualify someone to become a commercial passenger pilot. Instead, it provides the essential foundation upon which the pilot can build further experience and advanced training.

Because balloon training is competency-based and entirely dependent on suitable weather conditions, there are no guaranteed completion dates.

The Training Provider may postpone or reschedule flying lessons, briefings and assessments because of weather, safety, operational or regulatory requirements. In addition, a student’s availability, progress, previous experience and ability to demonstrate the required competence will affect the training period.

Ballooning rewards patience. Therefore, trying to force training into an unrealistic timetable would be contrary to the principles of safe aviation.

Before formal acceptance and the commencement of flight training, prospective students must complete the pre-enrolment process and a compulsory Training Introductory Flight with the Training Provider.

As a result, applicants can experience the practical training environment, ask questions and gain a realistic understanding of the commitment involved. However, completing the introductory flight does not guarantee acceptance into the training programme.

The Winter Fun Flights 2026 brought experienced hot air balloon pilots, crews and ballooning enthusiasts together in the Magalies River Valley from 17 to 19 July 2026. Hosted by Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris, the weekend celebrated friendly competition, flying skill, ballooning camaraderie and 45 years of ballooning heritage.

The event brought together sports balloonists, commercial pilots, hobbyists, crew members and friends from the South African ballooning community for a weekend of friendly competition, skilful flying and good old-fashioned ballooning camaraderie.

Held during our 45th anniversary year, the Winter Fun Flight Fest was also a celebration of the people, traditions and shared passion that have shaped ballooning in South Africa over many decades.

Winter Fun Flights 2026 Takes to the Sky

The pilots were presented with a series of challenges designed to test their ability to read the wind, control their balloons and make sound decisions throughout each flight.

The competition was never simply about reaching a destination. Pilots needed to demonstrate judgement, patience, timing, speed control and, above all, safe and responsible flying.

Saturday morning’s competition combined two recognised ballooning tasks: Judge Declared Goals and a Calculated Rate of Approach.

Three designated landing goals were available, and each pilot was required to declare which goal they intended to reach before take-off. They then had to manage their speed and direction carefully, aiming to land at the selected field within the designated arrival period.

Points were awarded for reaching the correct or an alternative field, together with points based on the balloon’s arrival time. GPS safety tracks were used to assist with the scoring and auditing of the results.

It was an entertaining challenge for spectators, but a demanding exercise for the pilots, who had to work with the wind rather than against it. As every balloonist knows, the wind always has the final say.

Flying Challenges at the Winter Fun Flights 2026

Hot air ballooning is entirely weather dependent, and the safety of pilots, crew, passengers and spectators must always come before competition.

Unfortunately, Saturday afternoon’s fly-in challenge was cancelled due to strong winds.

The challenge scheduled for Sunday morning was also cancelled because of strong winds and a wind direction that was not conducive to a safe flight.

Although everyone would have loved another opportunity to take to the skies, the decision not to fly was the correct one. Knowing when not to launch is just as important as knowing how to fly, and responsible decision-making remains one of the most important skills in aviation.

The final competition results were therefore calculated from the official challenge elements that could be completed safely.

Winter Fun Flights 2026 Placements and Prize Winners

Following the completion and auditing of the official competition scores, the final placements were announced.

First place: Ian Schilz

Ian Schilz took first place in the Winter Fun Flight Fest 2026.

His prize was a two-night stay for two adults sharing at the beautiful SiriMiri Cottage in Dullstroom.

Second place: Juandre Janse van Vuuren

Juandre Janse van Vuuren achieved overall second place.

His prize was a one-night stay for two adults at Leopard Lodge.

Third place: Felicity Clegg

Felicity Clegg secured third place overall.

Her prize was a one-night stay for two people sharing at the Indaba Hotel, including breakfast at Epsom Restaurant and dinner at Chief’s Boma, excluding drinks.

Juandre Janse van Vuuren received a two-hour Gin School Masterclass experience for two people at the Indaba Hotel.

Not every memorable achievement can be measured by GPS or recorded on a score sheet. A number of light-hearted awards were presented in recognition of the personalities, teamwork and memorable moments that made the weekend so enjoyable.

Cheese-kop Award: Jim Seton-Rogers

For keeping his head in the game, even when you have had a few holes in his plans! Jim received 1 kg of cheese from Van Gaalen Kaasmakerij.

Best Spirit Award: Ianthé Honiball

Ianthé received a two-hour Gin School Masterclass for two people at the Indaba Hotel, together with a R200 voucher for Wimpy Arrow’s Rest.

Best Dressed Team: Dave MacGregor

Dave and his team received a R200 Mugg & Bean Hartbeespoort voucher and a R200 Vovo Telo Hartbeespoort voucher.

Best Inflation: Eugene Schilz

Eugene received a Van Gaalen Cheese Tour for two adults.

Most Enthusiastic Participant: Alan Turner

Alan received a Van Gaalen Cheese Tour for two adults.

Early Bird Award: Dale de Klerk

Dale received an Indaba Hotel Tasting Room experience for two adults, including a wine and chocolate pairing.

Finding Nemo Award: Hein van der Merwe

Hein received Villa Paradiso weekend buffet breakfast vouchers for two adults, together with a R100 Mugg & Bean Hartbeespoort voucher.

Most Miles Walked in a Day: Armand “Kortbroek”

Armand, who certainly earned his title as Daleen’s runner, received Villa Paradiso weekend buffet breakfast vouchers for two adults and a R100 Vovo Telo Hartbeespoort voucher.

Pilot’s Pilot Award: Jim Seton-Rogers

Jim received a Black Horse Brewery beer or gin tasting for two, together with a gift bag from DJA Aviation Insurance.

The Pilot’s Pilot Award is particularly special because it recognises the respect and appreciation of fellow balloonists. Congratulations, Jim.

The Winter Fun Flight Fest 2026 was about far more than rankings and prizes.

For Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris, hosting the event during our 45th anniversary year made it especially meaningful. Since 1981, we have seen ballooning technology, navigation and operating standards evolve, but the heart of ballooning has remained the same: respect for the weather, trust between pilot and crew, and the remarkable friendships formed through a shared love of flight.
