← Back to Balloon School

Hot air balloon pilot training combines theoretical knowledge, practical flight instruction and ground-based operational experience. Students must learn how the aircraft works, how weather affects every flight and how to make safe decisions before leaving the ground.

It is a structured aviation training process. Therefore, it should not be confused with a recreational flying lesson or a once-off balloon experience.

A Structured Aviation Training Programme

Formal balloon pilot training must take place through an appropriately approved aviation training organisation. The training programme must also follow the applicable South African Civil Aviation Regulations and technical standards.

Students progress by demonstrating knowledge, practical ability and sound judgement. As a result, completing a certain number of activities does not automatically make someone competent to operate a balloon safely.

Ground School and Theoretical Knowledge

Ground school gives students the knowledge required to plan and conduct balloon flights safely.

Training may cover:

Principles of flight and the behaviour of heated air

Balloon envelopes, baskets, burners and fuel systems

Aircraft instruments and equipment

Meteorology and weather interpretation

Air law and applicable aviation regulations

Airspace and operational restrictions

Navigation, maps and flight planning

Human performance and aviation decision-making

Communication and crew coordination

Emergency procedures and risk management

Students must understand more than how to make a balloon climb or descend. They must also learn when conditions are suitable for flight and when the safest decision is not to launch.

Practical Flight Training

Practical instruction allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge in a working balloon environment.

Depending on the stage of training, practical instruction may include:

Assessing the launch site and surrounding area

Reviewing weather information and flight conditions

Completing pre-flight inspections

Preparing the basket, burners and fuel system

Assisting with inflation and launch procedures

Controlling climbs, descents and level flight

Interpreting wind direction at different heights

Planning approaches and selecting landing areas

Conducting safe landings

Coordinating with the ground crew

Completing post-flight inspections and operational records

The instructor introduces these responsibilities progressively. Students first observe and assist. Then, as their competence develops, they take on more responsibility under supervision.

Learning Through Ground Crew Operations

Balloon pilots need a thorough understanding of ground operations. For this reason, practical experience starts long before a student takes control in flight.

Ground crew experience teaches students how to prepare equipment, assist with inflation and manage the launch area. It also helps them understand vehicle coordination, balloon recovery and post-flight procedures.

This experience builds respect for the complete operation. In addition, it shows students how every crew member contributes to a safe flight.

Weather and Flight Planning

Weather plays a central role in balloon pilot training. Unlike powered aircraft, a balloon travels with the moving air mass. Pilots therefore need to understand surface conditions, winds at different heights and forecast changes.

Students learn to assess whether conditions remain suitable for a planned flight. They must also consider visibility, terrain, landing options and operational limitations.

Most importantly, good pilots do not treat cancelling a flight as failure. They recognise that deciding not to fly can be the most professional decision of the day.

Safety and Aviation Decision-Making

Technical flying ability is only one part of pilot training. Students must also develop disciplined decision-making skills.

Training includes identifying hazards, considering available options and responding to changing conditions. Students also learn how to manage abnormal or emergency situations calmly and systematically.

An instructor will assess how a student prepares, communicates and makes decisions throughout the operation. Therefore, safe judgement matters just as much as physical aircraft control.

Training Progress Depends on Competence

Balloon training is weather-dependent and competency-based. Consequently, the time required to complete training differs between students.

Progress may depend on:

Suitable flying weather

The student’s availability

The frequency of training

Instructor and aircraft availability

The student’s preparation between lessons

The ability to demonstrate each required competency

Students should prepare for a genuine commitment rather than expecting a quick course completed over a fixed number of weekends.

Examinations and the Practical Flight Test

The licensing pathway includes formal assessments. These may involve theoretical examinations, completed training records and a practical flight test with an appropriately authorised examiner.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority publishes the relevant licensing forms and requirements for the Free Balloon Pilot Licence. However, regulatory and Training Provider requirements may change. Students should therefore work from the current information supplied by their Training Provider.

Training Within a Working Balloon Environment

Balloon School brings together Alpi Aviation and Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris in Skeerpoort, South Africa.

Students gain insight into balloon operations within an established commercial environment. This setting helps connect theoretical learning with the practical realities of planning, crew coordination, aircraft preparation and responsible decision-making.

However, training remains separate from employment. Participation does not guarantee a position with Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris or any other balloon operator.

The Next Step in the Journey

Before enrolling in the full training programme, prospective students must complete the required application and assessment process.

The next Flight Log examines an important part of that process: the compulsory Training Introductory Flight.

← Back to Balloon School

Hot air balloon pilot training is open to people from many different backgrounds. However, applicants must meet specific academic, medical, physical and administrative requirements before they can begin formal training.

Meeting the entry requirements does not mean that someone already qualifies for a pilot licence. Instead, it confirms that the applicant may proceed through the Balloon School’s pre-enrolment and assessment process.

Understanding the Licensing Terminology

South African aviation regulations refer to the entry-level balloon licence as a Free Balloon Pilot Licence. Within the ballooning industry, people commonly refer to it as a Balloon Private Pilot Licence or Balloon PPL.

The Balloon PPL is a non-commercial aviation licence. Therefore, applicants who eventually want to fly passengers for reward must first complete the private licensing stage and later meet the additional requirements for commercial balloon operations.

Minimum Academic Requirements

Applicants must provide proof of Grade 12, an NQF Level 4 qualification or an accepted equivalent.

Applicants with qualifications obtained outside South Africa may need to provide a South African Qualifications Authority evaluation. This allows the Training Provider to confirm that the qualification meets the required academic level.

In addition, applicants must have sufficient English proficiency to understand aviation instruction, safety briefings, study material, examinations and operational communication.

Age and Identity Requirements

Applicants must meet the minimum age requirements that apply at the relevant stage of training and licensing.

The pre-enrolment application requires a certified copy of the applicant’s South African identity document or passport. International applicants may also need to provide valid visa, study-permit or residency documentation.

Because licensing requirements can change, the Training Provider will confirm the applicable age and documentation requirements during the application review.

Aviation Medical Fitness

Balloon pilot training involves active participation on the ground and in the air. Consequently, applicants must meet the aviation medical requirements that apply to the relevant training and licensing stage.

An aviation medical examination must be completed by an appropriately designated aviation medical examiner. The medical process may include additional reports, certificates or examinations when required.

Applicants must disclose any medical condition, recent surgery, medication, previous medical restriction or other information that could affect safe participation. Hiding relevant medical information can place the applicant, instructor, crew and others at risk.

Physical Ability and Safe Participation

Ballooning does not require the physique of a professional athlete. Nevertheless, students must be able to participate safely in practical training.

Applicants may need to demonstrate that they can:

Climb into and out of a balloon basket

Stand for the expected flight and training period

Move safely across uneven ground

Assist with practical balloon operations

Follow instructions around burners, fuel systems and moving equipment

Participate safely during take-off, flight and landing procedures

Applicants who require support or accommodation must disclose this during the pre-enrolment process. The Training Provider can then assess whether the requested support is practical and compatible with aviation safety.

Supporting Documents

Applicants should prepare the supporting documents listed in the current Balloon School pre-enrolment application.

Depending on the applicant and training stage, these may include:

Certified identity document or passport

Passport photographs

Proof of Grade 12, NQF Level 4 or equivalent qualification

SAQA evaluation for a foreign qualification

Aviation medical documentation, when applicable

Previous pilot licence or logbook, if applicable

Visa or study-permit documentation

Motivational letter

Copies of relevant academic qualifications

Additional documents requested during the application review

Submitting an application without the required documents may delay the review process.

Availability and Training Expectations

Hot air balloon pilot training is competency-based and weather-dependent. Therefore, applicants must have realistic expectations about scheduling and completion.

Suitable flying conditions cannot be guaranteed on a specific date. Flying lessons, briefings and assessments may also be postponed because of weather, safety, operational or regulatory requirements.

Applicants should disclose their general availability, expected travel arrangements and any periods during which they cannot attend training.

The Compulsory Training Introductory Flight

Before formal acceptance and the commencement of flight training, every applicant must complete a compulsory Training Introductory Flight with the Training Provider.

The introductory flight allows the applicant to experience the training environment, ask practical questions and gain a realistic understanding of balloon operations. At the same time, it allows the Training Provider to assess the applicant’s basic suitability and approach to aviation training.

However, completing the introductory flight does not guarantee acceptance into the Balloon School.

Application Review and Acceptance

The Balloon School reviews every application individually. As a result, acceptance depends on more than submitting a form or paying a fee.

The review may consider:

Eligibility and supporting documentation

Medical fitness and safe participation

Academic preparation

Availability and commitment

Conduct during the introductory briefing and flight

Capacity within the training programme

Operational and regulatory requirements

The Training Provider may request further information, clarification or documentation before making a final decision.

Licensing and training requirements remain subject to the current South African Civil Aviation Regulations, applicable SACAA technical standards and Training Provider requirements.

Your First Step

Applicants who believe they meet the entry requirements can begin by completing the Balloon School pre-enrolment application and submitting the required supporting documents.

Alpi Aviation, in collaboration with Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris, provides a structured pathway into balloon pilot training within a working commercial ballooning environment in the Magalies River Valley.

For the right candidate, meeting the entry requirements is the first practical step towards turning an interest in ballooning into a serious aviation journey.

← Back to Balloon School

For aspiring hot air balloon pilots, the first formal licensing step is usually the Balloon Private Pilot Licence, commonly referred to as the Balloon PPL.

A Balloon PPL is a regulated aviation licence. It is not a recreational certificate, a short course or simply proof that someone has completed a few flying lessons. The licence confirms that the holder has completed the required theoretical and practical training and demonstrated the competence needed to operate a hot air balloon privately, subject to the applicable licence privileges and restrictions.

A Licence for Private Balloon Flying

The Balloon PPL allows a qualified pilot to fly within the privileges of a private pilot licence. It does not permit the holder to conduct commercial passenger flights or receive payment for acting as a commercial balloon pilot.

For many students, the Balloon PPL is the beginning of a much longer aviation journey. Some pilots train because they want to fly privately, while others intend to gain experience and eventually progress towards commercial balloon operations.

What Does Balloon PPL Training Include?

Balloon pilot training combines theoretical study with practical instruction. Students must learn far more than how to make a balloon climb or descend.

More specifically, training may include:

Air law and aviation procedures

Meteorology and weather interpretation

Navigation and flight planning

Balloon systems and equipment

Pre-flight preparation and safety checks

Inflation and deflation procedures

Burner operation and fuel management

Practical flight instruction

Landing preparation and decision-making

Crew coordination and retrieval operations

Emergency procedures and aviation safety

In addition, students develop the judgement required to decide when conditions are suitable for flight. In ballooning, choosing not to fly can be every bit as important as knowing how to fly.

Balloon PPL Versus Commercial Pilot Licence

A Balloon PPL is a non-commercial licence. A pilot who wishes to fly fare-paying passengers or work within commercial balloon operations must meet the additional experience, medical, training, examination and licensing requirements applicable to commercial balloon pilots.

However, obtaining a Balloon PPL does not automatically qualify someone to become a commercial passenger pilot. Instead, it provides the essential foundation upon which the pilot can build further experience and advanced training.

How Long Does Balloon PPL Training Take?

Because balloon training is competency-based and entirely dependent on suitable weather conditions, there are no guaranteed completion dates.

The Training Provider may postpone or reschedule flying lessons, briefings and assessments because of weather, safety, operational or regulatory requirements. In addition, a student’s availability, progress, previous experience and ability to demonstrate the required competence will affect the training period.

Ballooning rewards patience. Therefore, trying to force training into an unrealistic timetable would be contrary to the principles of safe aviation.

Where Does the Journey Begin?

Before formal acceptance and the commencement of flight training, prospective students must complete the pre-enrolment process and a compulsory Training Introductory Flight with the Training Provider.

As a result, applicants can experience the practical training environment, ask questions and gain a realistic understanding of the commitment involved. However, completing the introductory flight does not guarantee acceptance into the training programme.

Alpi Aviation, in collaboration with Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris, offers balloon pilot training with access to experienced instructors and a working commercial ballooning environment in the Magalies River Valley.

Ultimately, the Balloon PPL is where the dream of becoming a hot air balloon pilot begins for those who meet the requirements and approach aviation training with patience, discipline and respect for the weather.

← Back to Balloon School

If you’ve ever wondered how to become a hot air balloon pilot, you’re not alone. It’s one of the questions we’re asked most often at Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris.

When you watch a hot air balloon drift silently across the sunrise sky, it all looks wonderfully effortless. The gentle climb, the peaceful flight and the smooth landing create the impression that ballooning is easy.

Becoming a commercial hot air balloon pilot in South Africa is a journey that combines formal training, practical experience and a thorough understanding of aviation safety, weather and teamwork.

Welcome to Balloon School, where we’ll take you behind the scenes of the fascinating world of hot air ballooning. In this first chapter, we’re answering one of the questions we’re asked most often: What do I need to do to become a hot air balloon pilot?

Every Hot Air Balloon Pilot Starts on the Ground

Unlike many people imagine, future balloon pilots don’t start their journey in the basket.

They start as part of the ground crew.

Their role includes helping to unpack and inflate the balloon before sunrise, preparing the basket and burners, assisting with passenger boarding and working with the retrieval crew after landing.

Long before taking control of a balloon, aspiring pilots learn how every part of the operation works. They help unpack and inflate the balloon before sunrise, prepare the basket and burners, assist with passenger boarding and work with the retrieval crew after landing.

These early experiences teach much more than practical skills. They build discipline, teamwork and an understanding that every successful flight depends on everyone working together.

A thorough knowledge of each component is essential before any pilot progresses to the next stage of training.

Learning the Aircraft

Although a hot air balloon may appear simple from a distance, it is a sophisticated aircraft with many important components.

Pilots must become familiar with:

The envelope, the colourful fabric that holds the hot air.

The basket, designed to safely carry passengers and equipment.

The burner system, which heats the air inside the envelope.

Fuel cylinders and fuel management.

Rigging, cables and safety equipment.

Daily inspections before every flight.

Understanding how each component works is essential before any pilot progresses to the next stage of training.

Weather Is Your Greatest Teacher

Ask any experienced balloon pilot what the most important skill is, and many will answer with one word: weather.

Unlike powered aircraft, a hot air balloon travels with the wind. That means understanding the atmosphere is one of the most important parts of becoming a safe pilot.

Training includes learning how to interpret:

Wind speed and direction.

Atmospheric stability.

Temperature.

Visibility.

Cloud formations.

Weather forecasts.

Every commercial flight begins with careful weather planning. If conditions aren’t suitable, the safest decision is always to remain on the ground.

Flying Without a Steering Wheel

One of the biggest surprises for first-time passengers is discovering that hot air balloons don’t have a steering wheel.

Instead, pilots use nature to their advantage.

By climbing or descending into different layers of air, they can often find winds travelling in slightly different directions. This allows experienced pilots to influence the balloon’s path while working with the atmosphere rather than against it.

It’s a skill that develops through training, local knowledge and hundreds of hours of experience.

How to Become a Hot Air Balloon Pilot Through Flight Training

Once a trainee has built a solid foundation, practical flight instruction begins under the guidance of qualified instructors.

Students learn how to:

Prepare for flight.

Conduct thorough pre-flight inspections.

Manage altitude using the burners.

Monitor changing weather conditions.

Plan safe take-offs and landings.

Work closely with the ground crew throughout every flight.

Like all aviation disciplines, becoming a balloon pilot requires both practical experience and theoretical knowledge.

Safety Is Essential for Every Hot Air Balloon Pilot

One of the biggest misconceptions about aviation is that training ends once a licence is issued.

In reality, learning never stops.

Professional balloon pilots continually build experience, refine their decision-making and stay current with aviation requirements and operational procedures.

At Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris, safety has been the foundation of every flight for more than 45 years. Every operation is conducted under strict aviation regulations, supported by experienced pilots, dedicated crew members and meticulously maintained equipment.

A Career Built on Passion

For many balloon pilots, flying isn’t simply a career. It’s a passion.

Every morning begins before sunrise. No two flights are ever the same. Each landing presents new challenges. Ultimately, every passenger steps out of the basket with memories they’ll carry for a lifetime.

Therefore, behind every peaceful balloon flight is a team of dedicated professionals committed to delivering an unforgettable experience while maintaining the highest standards of safety.

Did You Know?

🎈 Every commercial balloon pilot begins by learning the fundamentals on the ground. Understanding the balloon, the weather and the crew’s role is just as important as learning to fly.

Continue Your Balloon School Journey

This is just the beginning.

In the next Flight Log, we’ll answer another fascinating question: Why Do Hot Air Balloon Flights Take Place at Sunrise?

You’ll discover why the first light of day offers the safest, smoothest and most spectacular conditions for ballooning.

Ready to Experience the Magic?
